Small Business Phone Systems – A Brief Explanation

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

How a business presents itself to its customers has to be the single most important factor in its potential success. In days gone by usually your first contact with new customers would have been through your storefront or through word of mouth, passed on by other satisfied customers. In today’s modern world, telecommunication plays an ever increasing role in reaching potential new customers.

In the last few years the rate at which computing and telecommunication technology has advanced is simply astounding. With this increased rate of technological development comes falling prices for products that were once extremely expensive. This allows smaller companies to take advantage of features and services that were once only available to much larger and richer organisations.

Once upon a time the telephone was the primary mode of communication, whereas now existing and new customers are able to reach you I a variety of different ways. This article will give a brief overview of what is available and how you can use it.

Voice: The Telephone
When the internet was first becoming popular, many experts predicted it would kill off the telephone. Little did they know that in fact the exact opposite would happen. The massive growth in online shopping has generated massive amounts of customer phone enquiries, making the telephone still the most important communication tool throughout the world.

The internet is undoubtedly an impressive medium for publishing information, but it is not a person. Some customers would rather deal with a real life human being rather than with a machine. There are many situations where a person is much better suited to talk to customers than a machine is. The internet is not so good at dealing with higher priced items. Customers enquiring about these higher priced goods would in most cases prefer to deal with a person, and that is where the telephone comes in handy.

Phone Systems
The selection and installation of an appropriate phone system is probably one of the most important purchases a business will ever make. A bad phone system will repel potential customers; a good phone system will help them, guide them through a process, make it appear as though they have a direct line and most importantly make them feel like their business is both wanted and appreciated.

Phone systems with advanced features like voice mail, ACD (call queuing) and auto attendant, used to be extremely overpriced. Because of the integration between computing and telecom technology, prices have come down dramatically, although system performance and features have actually increased. Now a market that was once largely ignored by the telecoms industry and vendors alike is a thriving sector with manufacturers constantly improving and upgrading systems in a bid to attract your business.

The new phone systems developed for this small office/home office market sector can be split into three basic categories: key systems, mini-PBX’s (including PC-based phone systems), and LAN based phone systems.

Key Systems
In the past few years some of the best developments have been in low cost intercom style systems for small businesses of typically 12 or fewer users. The biggest market sector in the telecoms industry is undoubtedly that of small businesses who have 10 or fewer users. It now seems almost comical that this market was largely ignored in the past. New KSU-Less systems allow even the smallest offices to enjoy more advanced features that used to be only normally associated with larger more expensive systems. These systems are extremely cost effective and designed to make use of existing telecoms wiring.

The systems in this category that have benefited most from development investment are hybrid corded and cordless phone systems. These systems allow users to integrate cordless as well as corded phones within intercom systems. Office based employees would have corded phones whereas mobile employees such as warehouse operatives could have cordless phones.

Mini-PBX’s
Mini PBX systems are ideally suited to companies who have more than 10 employees, but fewer than 100. Mini PBX’s can give access to features like voice mail, automated attendant, intercom, computer integration and call distribution.

There are 2 categories of mini-PBX phone systems, self contained devices and computer based phone systems. There are a few companies who make self contained systems. These systems are easy to install and require very minimal computer and networking knowledge. These systems provide basic features like voice mail, auto attendant, intercom and a few others. It must be stressed though that although these systems will suffice for most small business applications, they cannot always provide all the specialist features each individual business may require. Mini-PBX’s that are computer based are generally speaking for the more technically advanced users, and can offer a wider range of features that can be customised to meet a businesses requirements. A good example of advanced features is advanced IVR (auto-attendant) scripts. This allows computerised phone systems to route calls to specific groups based on how the caller has responded to prompts. These computerised systems allow even small companies to handle their calls in a way normally associated with large call centres.

LAN (IP)-based phone systems
Companies that have installed a high speed local area network (LAN) for connecting their computers can use this same network as the backbone for their office phone system. Many phone system suppliers are edging towards this approach, and there are already several LAN-based phone systems which use a company’s Ethernet data network to transport phone calls and data.

LAN-based phone systems were a very experimental idea. They had unpredictable audio quality; neither did they offer features that users of conventional phone systems take for granted. This has all changed as phone system vendors have retooled the business phone systems to use data networks as their backbone.

Intuition – Part I

I. The Three Intuitions

IA. Eidetic Intuitions

Intuition is supposed to be a form of direct access. Yet, direct access to what? Does it access directly “intuitions” (abstract objects, akin to numbers or properties – see “Bestowed Existence”)? Are intuitions the objects of the mental act of Intuition? Perhaps intuition is the mind’s way of interacting directly with Platonic ideals or Phenomenological “essences”? By “directly” I mean without the intellectual mediation of a manipulated symbol system, and without the benefits of inference, observation, experience, or reason.

Kant thought that both (Euclidean) space and time are intuited. In other words, he thought that the senses interact with our (transcendental) intuitions to produce synthetic a-priori knowledge. The raw data obtained by our senses -our sensa or sensory experience – presuppose intuition. One could argue that intuition is independent of our senses. Thus, these intuitions (call them “eidetic intuitions”) would not be the result of sensory data, or of calculation, or of the processing and manipulation of same. Kant’s “Erscheiung” (“phenomenon”, or “appearance” of an object to the senses) is actually a kind of sense-intuition later processed by the categories of substance and cause. As opposed to the phenomenon, the “nuomenon” (thing in itself) is not subject to these categories.

Descartes’ “I (think therefore I) am” is an immediate and indubitable innate intuition from which his metaphysical system is derived. Descartes’ work in this respect is reminiscent of Gnosticism in which the intuition of the mystery of the self leads to revelation.

Bergson described a kind of instinctual empathic intuition which penetrates objects and persons, identifies with them and, in this way, derives knowledge about the absolutes – “duration” (the essence of all living things) and “élan vital” (the creative life force). He wrote: “(Intuition is an) instinct that has become disinterested, self-conscious, capable of reflecting upon its object and of enlarging it indefinitely.” Thus, to him, science (the use of symbols by our intelligence to describe reality) is the falsification of reality. Only art, based on intuition, unhindered by mediating thought, not warped by symbols – provides one with access to reality.

Spinoza’s and Bergson’s intuited knowledge of the world as an interconnected whole is also an “eidetic intuition”.

Spinoza thought that intuitive knowledge is superior to both empirical (sense) knowledge and scientific (reasoning) knowledge. It unites the mind with the Infinite Being and reveals to it an orderly, holistic, Universe.

Friedrich Schleiermacher and Rudolf Otto discussed the religious experience of the “numinous” (God, or the spiritual power) as a kind of intuitive, pre-lingual, and immediate feeling.

Croce distinguished “concept” (representation or classification) from “intuition” (expression of the individuality of an objet d’art). Aesthetic interest is intuitive. Art, according to Croce and Collingwood, should be mainly concerned with expression (i.e., with intuition) as an end unto itself, unconcerned with other ends (e.g., expressing certain states of mind).

Eidetic intuitions are also similar to “paramartha satya” (the “ultimate truth”) in the Madhyamika school of Buddhist thought. The ultimate truth cannot be expressed verbally and is beyond empirical (and illusory) phenomena. Eastern thought (e.g. Zen Buddhism) uses intuition (or experience) to study reality in a non-dualistic manner.

IB. Emergent Intuitions

A second type of intuition is the “emergent intuition”. Subjectively, the intuiting person has the impression of a “shortcut” or even a “short circuiting” of his usually linear thought processes often based on trial and error. This type of intuition feels “magical”, a quantum leap from premise to conclusion, the parsimonious selection of the useful and the workable from a myriad possibilities. Intuition, in other words, is rather like a dreamlike truncated thought process, the subjective equivalent of a wormhole in Cosmology. It is often preceded by periods of frustration, dead ends, failures, and blind alleys in one’s work.

Artists – especially performing artists (like musicians) – often describe their interpretation of an artwork (e.g., a musical piece) in terms of this type of intuition. Many mathematicians and physicists (following a kind of Pythagorean tradition) use emergent intuitions in solving general nonlinear equations (by guessing the approximants) or partial differential equations.

Henri Poincaret insisted (in a presentation to the Psychological Society of Paris, 1901) that even simple mathematical operations require an “intuition of mathematical order” without which no creativity in mathematics is possible. He described how some of his creative work occurred to him out of the blue and without any preparation, the result of emergent intuitions. These intuitions had “the characteristics of brevity, suddenness and immediate certainty… Most striking at first is this appearance of sudden illumination, a manifest sign of long, unconscious prior work. The role of this unconscious work in mathematical invention appears to me incontestable, and traces of it would be found in other cases where it is less evident.”

Subjectively, emergent intuitions are indistinguishable from insights. Yet insight is more “cognitive” and structured and concerned with objective learning and knowledge. It is a novel reaction or solution, based on already acquired responses and skills, to new stimuli and challenges. Still, a strong emotional (e.g., aesthetic) correlate usually exists in both insight and emergent intuition.

Intuition and insight are strong elements in creativity, the human response to an ever changing environment. They are shock inducers and destabilizers. Their aim is to move the organism from one established equilibrium to the next and thus better prepare it to cope with new possibilities, challenges, and experiences. Both insight and intuition are in the realm of the unconscious, the simple, and the mentally disordered. Hence the great importance of obtaining insights and integrating them in psychoanalysis – an equilibrium altering therapy.

IC. Ideal Intuitions

The third type of intuition is the “ideal intuition”. These are thoughts and feelings that precede any intellectual analysis and underlie it. Moral ideals and rules may be such intuitions (see “Morality – a State of Mind?”). Mathematical and logical axioms and basic rules of inference (“necessary truths”) may also turn out to be intuitions. These moral, mathematical, and logical self-evident conventions do not relate to the world. They are elements of the languages we use to describe the world (or of the codes that regulate our conduct in it). It follows that these a-priori languages and codes are nothing but the set of our embedded ideal intuitions.

As the Rationalists realized, ideal intuitions (a class of undeniable, self-evident truths and principles) can be accessed by our intellect. Rationalism is concerned with intuitions – though only with those intuitions available to reason and intellect. Sometimes, the boundary between intuition and deductive reasoning is blurred as they both yield the same results. Moreover, intuitions can be combined to yield metaphysical or philosophical systems. Descartes applied ideal intuitions (e.g., reason) to his eidetic intuitions to yield his metaphysics. Husserl, Twardowki, even Bolzano did the same in developing the philosophical school of Phenomenology.

Anger and the American Family: Learn to Respond Rather than

Thursday, October 16th, 2008

Case #1. Brianna, 32, would get instantly outraged when her ex-husband threatened to file for custody of their two small children. Deciding to respond differently, she bit her tongue, and remained quiet when he began threatening an escalated legal battle.

Unable to get the usual reaction from her, he calmed down and instantly became rational and more reasonable.

Case #2. Tom, 42, would become ballistic reacting to his 17 year old daughter who refused to see she was dating a “loser” boy. The more he yelled, the deeper she dug her heels and refused to give up the boy.

Applying the anger management tool of “respond instead of react”, Tom decided to try something different by includingthe boy into the family activities (as much as he could stand). After about three weeks of this, the daughteron herowndecided her “prince-charming” wasn’t the person she needed to enhance her life and ended the relationship.

Learn to be flexible

Individuals who practice good health do not continue behavior that doesn’t achieve desired results. Instead, they adjustor fine tunetheir responses depending on the situation.

There are many advantages to learning to be more flexibleand “response-able” in dealing with the stresses and frustrations in your life.

At the top of the list is a sense of empowerment. It just feels good to know that you are in charge of your responses, instead of being controlled by other people or circumstances.

Case # 3. Sixty-four year old Lynn left anger management class one night to find her apartment completely floodeddue to a burst water pipe.

Adding to her stress, her insurance company initially refused to pay her claim. She later told us, “I decided to use the tool you taught us of responding instead of reacting, so I cleaned up the whole place myself. I can’t tell you how wonderful and liberating it felt to know that I didn’t have to get upset.

Later, calmer, she recontacted her insurance agent who, this time, agreed to honor her claim! Learn to respond differently.

Step 1: Examine your attitude. Negative voices in your head can be quite convincing persuading you to judge others, be pessimistic, or think negatively, while creating the destructive feelings that go along with destructive thoughts.

Try to create a louder, more persuasive voice that helps you identify an equally believable, more optimistic viewpoint.

Step 2: Regulate your emotions. There are many ways to regulate your emotions and feelings in your life, including being your own best friend, eating well, exercising, playing, listening to uplifting music, getting in touch with a spiritual system, and creating emotional connections with others by sincere listening.

Step 3: Try alternative behaviors. Behaving differently is one of the most effective ways to show response flexibilityand get different results in your life.

But, doing things differently is not easy! We are all creatures of habit and we tend to continue behaving in comfortable and familiar ways.

One of the challenges in behaving differently is, of course, coming up with ideas on how else we can behave differently in various situations.

Start by understanding that much of our behavior is determined by a feeling or emotion we are havingor we wish to have. But a specific behavior does not HAVE to be connected with that feeling.

Try alternative behaviors when you get those angry feelings by asking yourself, “What are some other ways I can dealwith this situation?”

Often they include behaviors like taking a brisk walk, assertively communicating with your family member, taking a timeout, picking your battles, or listening to soothing music.

Ask yourself: What are some other ways I can deal with thissituation?

Respond vs. react: The difference between “react” and “respond” is “automatic reflex” versus a “thoughtful, reflective response” that considers different ways of dealing with a situation. A reaction is a kneejerk, automatic action. A response, however, is dealing with a situation by considering options and likely outcomes, then choosing the best.

Dimensional Shifts

Thursday, October 16th, 2008

DIMENSIONAL SHIFTS:

“Spirit is beyond the void of space. This realm, beyond the void, is not an empty nothingness; it is the womb of creation. — Nature goes to the same place to create a galaxy of stars, a cluster of nebulas, a rain forest, a human body, or a thought… That place is Spirit.” (6)

The idea of thought coming from Spirit is a little general and not something I agree with unless he means REAL thought rather than regurgitated thought. Deepak Chopra is a great and wonderful human being who escaped the material competitive focused world and the ‘expertise’ that was his, as a doctor. However, we have shown that science is getting dangerously close to finding templates and forms that mirror this kind of philosophy. The church felt science was philosophy and that all things came from this kind of godhead in the ‘Dark Ages’; and scientists have justifiably thought any mention of a bridge to religion is fraught with these kinds of intellectual authoritarian terrors. Perhaps now we can re-evaluate our belief in godly forces and not involve religious or priestly interpreters who ask us to ‘follow’ like sheep. To replace one set of interpreters with another form of ‘expertise’ is not good. Surely there is a balance that harmonizes with purpose and true knowingness.

The equipment based on Tesla’s ‘non-force info packets’ that draws energy from vacuum that Bearden has patented and the wireless transmission of generated energy will make perpetual motion seem tame. The real possibilities of using other dimensions as storage for energy we create could be just around the corner. Someday the barriers we have created in our real world through an ignorant adherence to conventions of black and white certainty will be brought down just like the Berlin Wall; we built it to keep ideas and people from each other.

I’m not cognizant of all the ins and outs of ‘red-shifts’ or other astrophysical esoterics so the generalities of my insights might not have as much merit. The exorcisms I’ve been involved in helping free both the possessed and possessor are part of the limbo state which energy exists in after death. Does this limbo state include the same energy band- width that our solar or auric body travels in? Not by experience of the astral work I’ve done. However, one can meet dead people in astral travel if one has a guide or the spirit is attuned that you are about to visit. That spirit would be a multi-dimensional traveler then. There are many shades and variations of spiritual bandwidths and it may be because there is so much more energy in the unseen world that the astrophysicists told us about earlier. Ninety-five per cent versus 5 per cent is a large ratio in favor of the unseen. The ultraviolet and light energies might even be part of the visible universe, which would mean we can only actually see a percentage of the material universe. And as big an issue as all of this kind of talk is, we still must consider whether or not we know what we see when it slaps us in the face, as they say.

The average person today will likely have their mind and senses closed to the opportunity that the thalami offer to accentuate, amplify and direct non-visual forces to our conscious processing centers. The operational paradigms of the spiritual world are a science unto themselves, and the astrophysicists may not have as good a picture as I hope they do. There are those I have met, who can travel between dimensions and we will deal with these aspects of life and natural possibilities versus hallucination in other parts of this book. But, if the modern research is right about the Thalami, I feel quite certain that all the dimensions are at our disposal in every aspect of our existence. When one remembers the way we thought about spirits and devils as we listened to the preachers who tried to tell us about HELL – it is difficult to open our minds to what they were saying about the saints who performed the very miracles that men and women have always been able to do.

We shall see that the ‘Gospel of Thomas’ from the Dag (or Nag) Hammadi ‘finds’ confirms Jesus never performed any miracle that you or I can’t do. We are all the ‘children of God’ (John 10:34). The dimensional spiritual world is science and real even if we are ignorant of it. That is what the Gnostics he studied with say is the ‘Original Sin’ that separates us from God – IGNORANCE! Scipio Africanus and others before and after the time of Jesus were used to seeing each other and the spirits of their loved ones alive or dead! In many instances there is potential to visualize the future and it will happen with proper INTENT. Bucky Fuller did it, and I have too. Some say the forces of darkness that created the Dark Age were able to re-program the world mind to the point that our ability was diminished by the evil they fomented. Energy of a negative nature does have to be attuned with good, in order for Abraxas or unity to occur, on the grand scale and as an individual. That is why selfish prayer is wasteful and one must operate in ‘brotherhood’ and love to come up with things like the geodesic dome or wireless ‘free energy’. Still these things are on the shelf and few really know how great they are and how much better the world might be.

Don’t Want to Miss out

Wednesday, October 15th, 2008

Since my husband and I had our first child, we have been more interested in staying home and working from there. I know that I do not want to go to work and leave our son with a babysitter or in a daycare center. My husband does not want to miss out on the different firsts that our son will be having, either. This has brought up the discussion of finding a legitimate home based business that would allow us to both stay home with our son. That way, neither one of us would be missing out on anything that our son does.

My parents have both been working since they were young teenagers, and now they are in to their sixties. Their retirement account does not have nearly enough money in it, so they are forced to continue working. This has been heartbreaking, and that is why I am trying to help them find a legitimate home based business. I figure that they should at least be able to work from the comfort of their home, if they have to keep on going for another ten or more years. At their age, they should not have to stress themselves out over money.

Google And The Government…..Why?

Tuesday, October 14th, 2008

I’m no history expert but the last time I checked it was the
United States not China

that was the land of the free, so why is our government
sticking their noses into how

Google is handling their search results in China?

I think it is safe to consider that the reason for all this
attention has something to do

with Google not handing over usage data to the U.S. Injustice
Department. Before

Googles refusal to hand over that data there was no mention of
how other search

engines were filtering their results in other countries,
coincidence? I don’t know

about you but I think there is a pretty clear link, and I also
think that no one Googling

in the U.S. cares about the filtering of search results in
other countries aside from

feeling bad for the searchers that don’t have the lighter
government filtering that I’m

sure some worthy hacker could prove is being used by our own
government of the

land of freedom.

If the U.S. Justice Department wants to find out what people are
looking for online, why

can’t they spend about a billion less dollars of our tax
dollars and just visit a few

webmaster resource sites, and find out the hard way like the
rest of us online etailers

and search engine optimizers?

In case no one noticed, once again the government is using your
safety as the bait to

get you to support their effort to obtain this information,
citing the war on child

pornography and the prevention of underage access to adult
material as the front that

needs this information. If governments truly want to keep adult
content where it belongs

with adults, then they should all work together for once and
let ICANN provide an adult

domain extension such as .xxx and require that sites with
pornographic material use

that extension so it can easily be filtered.

Do I agree with this as a webmaster? No. Adult content providers
have spent a

fortune on domain names and all these investments would go down
the drain should

they not be permitted to market under their rightfully owned
domain names. I think

that is one of the major obstacles to that plan, battles over
rights to domain names under the new extension between
competitors and domain squatters would cost all of them and some
taxpayers some tax dollars setting these disputes in court I’m
sure.

Do I agree with it as a parent to be and a taxpayer? Yes.
Requiring an online red-light

district of sorts would simplify the filtering of content and
free up all those tax dollars

that are being wasted on hassling Google making that money
available to agencies that

pursue and prosecute child pornographers where the money should
be being spent.

The information on search data is out there and it’s free if
they are willing to do the

work, so write your state reps and tell them to stop wasting
our tax dollars and our

Justice Department resources trying to get free information.
And if they want to get

involved on the way U.S. based companies are “cooperating with
China’s censorship

policies to mae a buck.” (quoted from statement by Chris Smith
R-NJ), they could

expand that curiosity to include the way many other U.S.
companies alter the way

they do business to make a buck in other countries. Maybe they
just haven’t figured

out how to include that in the “fighting for our safety” ad
campaign or perhaps they

would lose too many campaign contributions protecting us that
closely.

Great deal 35000 dollar at a right rate of 12.2 percent

Tuesday, October 14th, 2008

now you really need to check and go steady if you can have a bank loan at a safe percent interest rate. Now you can check rates quickly at websites and look if there are other conditions you should be aware of. 4.1 percent loan rate may come along so bonnie but will that be constant after you have to pay off your loan. You should be smart today to inspect if you have a bargain or if you don’t with the moneylender that offers you a loan. Investigate to see if the merchant bank who is tending to give you a money loan is serious. It makes no difference if you live in Flint Michigan or in Marietta Georgia a estimable online analysis will economize you often .

A bank in Kennewick Washington or so can have a total different actual rate of interest for a 20000 dollar bank loan then a moneylender in Grapevine Texas and that makes a big clear gap in your yearly costs. Many of the merchant banks wil show you a interest rate that looks clean but feels poorly or so after some time.

Tips & Tricks for More Efficiency

Monday, October 13th, 2008

When running an online business, there are so many important details to remember to take care of. Between the website maintenance, answering emails, writing articles, organizing ad swaps, searching for ezine content, etc., etc., we tend to get a little overwhelmed sometimes.

I would like to share some of my timesaving tips & tricks that I use to help me get things done more efficiently.

*Ezine Publishing

Save each issue of your ezine and just change what is necessary for each issue. When you come across a resource you would like to share with your readers, you can then just open up the template and slap the resource in place.

Print out all your ad swaps and write the date that each ad will run as you finalize each swap. Keep them all in their own file folder, so each week (or when your ezine is published) when you go through them, the dates will be easily seen and the ads will be organized. I find that this way of organizing my swaps is much easier than searching through email folders and floppies for the correct ads to run for each issue. I also use this method with my ad sales.

Keep all your past issues on floppy or CD, so when you reuse some of your ads or promotions you can just copy and paste into the current issue.

*Writing & Submitting Articles

You definitely want to have an idea notebook. Each time you get an idea for an article, write it down in the notebook. I usually get my ideas as I am getting Web Success ready to send out, but when I do get an idea between issues, I will write it down.

As you are writing the article, think to yourself, what information did I need and/or want to know about this subject when I was first starting. Just start writing as if you were telling a friend or family member about it. For me, it flows more naturally that way.

Have all your editor emails and article list addresses saved in their own email file. Also, save your “Dear Editor” email. When you finish each article, paste it into the saved email, copy and paste your editor addresses into the Bcc line and click send. Next open your saved article list email, paste the current article into it, paste the list addresses into the Bcc line and click send. What could take an hour or more now takes about 10 minutes.

*Answering Emails

If you are in affiliate programs, write and save a welcome email for each program. As you are notified of new members, go to your saved welcome messages, change the name and email address and click send. This is much more efficient than writing a new message for each new member.

Have email folders for organizing your emails. If they do not require an answer you can then just put each one into it’s proper folder. If they do require an answer, then drag them over to their folder after you answer each one. Of course, you want to save them to floppy or CD before distributing in folders. I have folders, for ad swaps, ad sales, subscribers, new affiliate members, affiliate sales, contacts, feedback, resources, sales made from my website, etc., etc. Each of these folders also has a floppy or CD backup.

*Website Additions

If your webpages are uniform, it is easy to make a new page. I just go to an existing page, copy the whole page, paste it into the new page, change the wording that needs to be changed and the page is finished.

I also use this method with sections of pages that I need. Copy the part of the code that you need and just paste it into place. This saves countless minutes of typing!!

These are just a few of the things that work for me. I realize that they might not work for everyone. If you have your own method that works for you, that is great! One method definitely does not work for all, but if you are looking for ways to get your business organized, these ideas might work for you!

Internet in Russia and Ukraine – Part 2. Major RuNet and UaNet Search Engines and Directories

Monday, October 13th, 2008

This article offers an updated list of the Russian and Ukrainian search sites to webmasters and website owners who seek to expand internationally. To read General Information on RuNet and UaNet, please go to http://www.azurel10n.com/ar_runet1.htm

Russian Search Engines and Directories

Yandex.ru Founded in 1997 as a search engine and directory, the site currently provides some additional search and indexing services via Yandex projects such as zakladki.ru, narod.ru, smart system for choosing goods, link popularity check, etc. Yandex indexes the Russian portion of the Internet, Russia-related resources and some Cyrillic Web resources in languages of ex-Soviet republics, Ukrainian in particular. The search engine reads meta tags and considers keyword density and link popularity in its ranking algorithm. The Yandex directory still accepts sites without payment, but the free inclusion procedure may take months and provides no guarantee for placement. To be listed in the directory within three working days, commercial and non-commercial sites must pay US$249 and $49 respectively, plus VAT. Generally speaking, Yandex looks like Yahoo when it comes to the controversial idea of charging for listing in a directory, while a free-inclusion search engine drives primary search results on the site. In addition to HTML-formatted content, the Yandex search engine indexes PDF, RTF and dynamically generated pages. By mid-September 2003, Yandex had indexed about 110 million pages with unique content.

Rambler.ru The site is a search engine combined with two directory-based rating systems: Rambler’s Top100 and Rambler’s TopShop. Since its foundation in 1996, the search engine has been indexing the Russian Web segment and the content with domains of other post-Soviet countries. Rambler ignores meta tags. Being listed in the Top100 directory is very beneficial to a site, because the Rambler search engine reviews the listed URLs daily, while other sites are visited every two weeks at most, except news sites that are spidered five times a day. Rambler offers free inclusion service. The search engine conducts over 1.1 million searches a day.

Aport.ru Search engine and directory. Aport indexes the Russian Web segment and the content with domains of other post-Soviet countries. The ranking algorithm considers meta tags, alt and title tags, keyword density, inbound links, commentaries and some other factors. The search engine indexes dynamic pages. The integrated directory is based on @Rus, once an independent search site. Both search engine and directory offer free inclusion. Aport operates as a constituent part of a Rol.ru portal that, in addition to its search options, offers services nationwide as an ISP and provides access to news (Rol.ru/news), sample essays (Referat.ru), entertainment pages (OMEN.Ru) and online games (Absolute games).

Google.com.ru – Not Google.Ru! Despite Google still lags behind the above search engines in Runet / Uanet search traffic, it becomes increasingly popular with the local searchers. Some opinion polls state that Google still accounts for three to nine percent of Runet search traffic, but many webmasters and analysts believe that its share in total searches on the Russian search sites is 10 percent at the very least. Google applies its general indexing rules to any Web content in Russian or related to Russia, whether or not a domain name is specific to Runet. This is a big advantage over its Russian competitors that are not so friendly to the websites with domain names like “yoursite.com”, “yoursite.org”, etc. and require them email their applications for inclusion. However, there seems little chance of Google taking the lead in Russia and Ukraine unless it improves its search algorithm in terms of the Russian and Ukrainian language morphology (flexions, synonyms, etc.). The drawback to morpheme search also means that web copy in Russian or Ukrainian should be crafted specifically for Google.

Many users still confuse Google (www.google.com.ru) with Google.Ru (www.google.ru). The first address is the true URL path to Google’s standard interface in Russian, while the second domain name has been cybersquatted on since August 2001. The site “Google.Ru” now operates as an information portal that delivers brand-name Google’s search results.

Lycos.ru Lycos Russia, a branch of Lycos Europe, first appeared on the Internet in August 2001. You can add your URLs to Lycos Russia’s search engine and directory for free. The search site is very helpful in doing the combined global-and-regional searches. Obviously, Lycos Russia stands a good chance of being ranked higher among the local search sites, but it may take a few more years for Lycos, still popular with Europeans, to ensure its profitability and growth on the Russian Web.

Punto.ru Search engine. Founded in 2001. Punto can filter out duplicated copy in search results, leaving the most relevant page. The search site has a software module that changes misspellings so that any misspelled keyword or phrase you type in cannot affect search results. Searches in Ukrainian are possible as well. The ranking algorithm places great importance on link popularity.

Turtle.ru The search engine with a bit peculiar name began operating in mid-2002, having over 81 million pages in its searchable database. Despite its name, Turtle does searches quite fast, but it displays the less relevant search results, compared to the top four engines. Turtle declares that it indexes the regional Internet portions of ex-Soviet republics (the CIS countries) in their national languages as well as the Russian-language Web resources of other countries. However, when I tested Turtle recently, it failed to do searches in Ukrainian. Automatic submission is not allowed.

Tela.ru A search engine that spiders the Russian portion of the Internet and considers the Russian-language morphology. There is a Ukrainian search page on the site, but it provides poor search results in Ukrainian. Tela needs no submission for a webpage to be indexed.

Metabot.ru Meta search engine. Russian and English versions.
