Tropical Gardening

Saturday, January 31st, 2009

The many varieties of tropical flowers come from the tropics and most of them are very colorful. Heliconia, Red ginger, Calla Lily, Anthurium and Birds of Paradise are some names of tropical flowers. July is a good time to do tropical gardening since these types of flowers come from a hot environment with high humidity. Put your plants in an area where they’ll receive at least six hours of sun a day but try to protect them from the wind. Too much sun is not good for these plants even though they are from the tropics. You can do tropical gardening in pots or directly in the ground. Plastic pots are recommended because they retain moisture.

Many tropical plants grow from seeds or cuttings. Most tropical plants require the same kind of care but there are some that have specific directions. It’s important for tropical plants to have a good amount of water because they need moisture. A sprinkler system is ideal if you plan on doing tropical gardening outdoors. You could also water them with a hose on a regular basis. Before you plant tropical flowers make sure the soil is the type that will help your plants thrive. The right kind of soil is also important for suitable drainage. Organic mulch can be used around the plants.

Some tropical plants are hardy and can withstand cold weather but most should be brought inside if temperatures are freezing. Some names of hardy tropical plants are Acanthus, Teasel, Scotch Thistle and Yucca. Hardy tropical plants shouldn’t be planted with other tropical tender plants. One reason for this is that hardy plants will obtain most of the water and food resources. Tropical gardening can give your garden a lush and beautiful look.

How Does Your Website Make Me Feel?

Friday, January 30th, 2009

When people think about the Internet, they think about technology. When people hear that I am a Website strategy expert, they see me as a “techy type”.

But for me, the most intriguing aspect of your online business isn’t about the technology. It’s about human connections, and how you can create these in a virtual environment.

It’s commonly understood that “people buy emotionally, not intellectually.” Even when people think they’re making a rational decision, powerful subconscious factors come into play. To sell effectively, we’re told to anticipate our customers’ needs, to demonstrate that we “feel their pain”, and to respond to clues in their body language and tone of voice.

In the “real world” we do this very well. And we know that if we can have a direct, in-person conversation, there’s a pretty good chance that we’ll close the sale or keep a happy customer.

For the online visitor, your Website is the next best thing to that in-person conversation with you, your colleagues or employees. And since so many people are researching products and services on the Web, it’s critical that your site has maximum impact in persuading them to take the next step with you.

So how does your Website connect emotionally with your visitors? Do they feel listened to, understood and appreciated by your Internet presence? Are you instinctively meeting their real needs? Do your existing customers feel supported and valued when interacting with you online?

Or are you failing to evoke the crucial emotional responses which can significantly enhance your response rates, sales and ongoing return on your Web investment?

The Critical Emotions for Website Success

I’ve been working with client Web strategies in a wide range of industries since 1995. Based on this experience, I’ve identified some key emotions that you need to evoke in your online visitors to create and sustain a profitable relationship.

How well your Website does this can have a major effect on the visceral, instinctive reactions of your visitors, and their propensity to buy from or connect with you.

In total, I have twenty criteria for emotional connectedness that I suggest for any Website. That’s too many to discuss in this article, but let’s look at a few highlights:

Do I Feel Recognized?

When we first meet in a business setting, we’re introduced, or we introduce ourselves with some statement about what we do, and why we should connect with each other.

When we talk with customers or prospects, it’s important to show very quickly that we understand their issues and needs, and that we have ideas and solutions to address these.

The most important task for your home page is to accomplish this initial introduction. You’ve heard the “ten-second” rule about how long a visitor will stay on a site that doesn’t engage them.

So, does your home page really tell me what you do? Does it speak to me in specific terms that make very clear what services you provide, and what type of customers or clients you work with? Does it use language that I’ll understand even if I don’t know the jargon of your industry or specialization?

Sounds simple?

There are astounding numbers of Websites that fail to provide basic information on the home page.

If your goal is to get the customer to visit your store, does your home page clearly show your location, and how to get there? Every time you force the visitor to make a decision, such as “Do I click on the Contact Us page to find their address?”, you open up the possibility that they’ll make the wrong choice (from your viewpoint), or worse still, they’ll just leave.

And is it clear to me whether you can – or would want to – help me? Are you geared towards corporate bulk buyers, or small businesses, or both? Do you operate nationally or only in your immediate location? Will your visitors know what you mean by generic terms such as “business systems” or “total business solutions” or should you be more specific as to what you offer? Do I Feel Engaged?

As we continue our “real-world” conversation, we start to find common points of interest, whether personal or professional. We begin to feel that we can relate with each other, and this helps to build our business relationship.

So your Website has to make the visitor feel drawn in – that they want to know more about your business, your products and your services – but again, from the viewpoint of their needs and interests. And you have to give the visitor a clear sense that you want to find those points of connection, and to learn more about them.

If the visitor doesn’t feel invited in, if they feel left to themselves to find their way around – if they’re overwhelmed, confused, or simply not interested in your site, they’ll leave.

Does your site present a bewildering array of manufacturers, products, or options without any guidance as to selecting from these? Think about the conversation that you’d have with a customer in your store. You’d find out what they were looking for, and then you’d ask a number of questions to help them find the right solution for their needs.

So how can you mirror this process online? You could offer a “Help Me” page that guides visitors through some Frequently Asked Questions or other choices and provides links to recommended products based on their answers. You could incorporate an interactive chat facility with a customer service agent during office hours, or access to a searchable knowledge base. Do I Feel Convinced?

If the visitor is seeing your business for the first time, they need to be comfortable that you are who you say you are, and that you can deliver what you promise.

One of the most important elements in establishing this part of the connection is to show the “faces” of your business. Have you noticed how many Websites don’t name any of their owners, or the people that customers will interact with? It’s much easier to have a conversation when I know who I’m talking to!

Customer testimonials and other third-party endorsements are critical elements in establishing trust – they say far more about you than your own marketing statements. How many sites have we all seen that trumpet “nationally recognized” or “premier provider . . .”? Prove it!

Include client quotes and success stories right across your site where they’re front and center as visitors are engaged in your content. If you win an award, tell the visitor what that means for them in terms of how you were evaluated. Do I Feel Motivated?

Towards the end of our “real-world” conversation, we’ll hopefully close a sale, or we’ll talk about some next steps, or we might say “Let’s stay in touch”. To do that with our online visitor, we need to persuade them to buy something, or to tell us who they are, and give us permission to reconnect with them.

Too many Web pages tail off with no call to action or directions about where to go next. If you don’t issue a clear invitation, you again leave it to the visitor to work out what to do – and you run a big risk of losing them.

So at every point on every page where the visitor might be thinking “Tell me more”, or “How do I get this?”, provide a clickable link to the next step, to your shopping cart, to your newsletter subscription page, or to whatever you want them to do. Don’t wait until the end of the page – they may never get there! Look for the emotional “tipping points” on every page where they’re ready to talk more with you and grab them in the moment!

Diluting the Connection

Of course, it’s all too easy to undo all the good feeling that we create by frustrating or annoying the visitor, or simply by giving them a dead end.

One of my favorite bugbears is the site search engine that allows me to enter my query, and then tells me “No results found. Please try again with different search terms”.

How is that supposed to make me feel? What was wrong with my keywords or my parameters if the search page allowed me to select them? Am I being stupid? Or do you really not want to help me?

Your visitor is clearly looking for something, and has taken a step towards connecting with you. So how about a results page that lets them know that you can’t immediately answer their question, but offers a link to your contact form so that they can send a question, or some tips or suggestions on how to find more information.

The ultimate customer service feature is an opportunity to interact with a live assistant – if your site offers this utility, the search results page is a perfect place to maximize its visibility.

So how “Emotionally Connected” is your Website?

I hope that I’ve sparked your curiosity enough to take a fresh look at your Website.

Think about specifically why visitors are coming to your site, what might be on their minds, and review your copy and navigation accordingly. Think about new customers and existing ones, employees, media – everyone who might have a reason to visit. Are you doing everything that you can to create an “emotionally connected” experience for everyone?

The right mix will gain you significantly higher time spent on your site, more calls from pre-qualified leads, more signed contracts, happier repeat customers, attention from new markets, offers of strategic alliances and collaborations, and insights into creating successful new products and services.

Being More Aggressive in Poker

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

A concept many beginners struggle with is how to be the aggressor in a pot. By taking control and driving the action in the pot, you force other poker players to make a play, and put them to a decision. They can no longer just take a card off; they must pay to see the flop, turn or river. By putting them to this decision, you give them the opportunity to make a mistake. By keeping your opponents guessing is to whether you are strong or weak by always making them pay to go further in pots that you play, you will project an image of strength, and will find yourself winning far more than when you play passively.

As far as poker styles go, the most commonly known winning style is tight aggressive play. Tight aggressive players enter pots with a variety of hands, but always back up their pre-flop raises with strong post-flop play. This can involve relentless continuation betting, as well as timely check-raises and powerful situational all-in pushes. This type of poker player is one that other players fear when they enter a pot, because they know they will not have an easy time taking the pot from them. Tight aggressive players do not have to be excessively wild, but they are consistent with their play, and are excellent at situational decision-making. More often than not, they will come up with the correct play for any given post-flop condition. Modeling your play after a solid tight aggressive player will yield strong results in the long run.

A great initial step to becoming more aggressive is to completely remove the pre-flop limp from your game. If you are going to enter a pot, raise it. Only play when you can open raise, or are strong enough to re-raise another player who opened in front. By limiting yourself to these options, you will only be playing very strong hands, and will have a higher probability at success, and learning the tight aggressive style. Once you master this type of play in a full ring game, you can start peppering in raises with weaker holdings to mix up your game, and playing tight aggressive in shorthanded or heads up situations.

Aggression is the key to victory in any battle. You may find yourself up against another assertive opponent, and you will have to learn to apply concepts of effective pot control and slow play, but mostly ways to mix up your play to keep another aggressive opponent on the defensive. Leading the way and putting people to decisions is the way to produce large victories in poker, and by applying concepts of tight aggression, you will find yourself on the winning end of many of the pots you play.

A Beginners Guide to Betting Establishment Gambling: the Gambling Games Gambling Fans Enjoying Taking Part in

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

The most common definition of a betting hall is a structure that offers card-playing. Here, customers will gamble at the coin operated machines or trying out another betting games. Betting room games routinely include well calculated chances constituting them which promise the establishment preserves a leverage over the gaming fans. free money casinos

Very many gambling saloon games can make you end up dependent very swiftly. We can consider the simple one-armed-bandit, a coin eating spin box with three or more reels that rotate when a knob latched onto it is started. The contraption normally pays out correlating with a given series of glyphs discernible on the panel of the contraption. Sadly, betting saloon pastimes present an illusion of jurisdiction, thereby conning the gambling fan – the punter is endowed decisions, but in actual fact these can never realistically nix the player’s disadvantage. That is brought about by the the betting saloon never returning the full stake as hoped for. This systematic process is again and again found in well-known casino games such as Texas hold’em, dice, roulette or blackjack.

Seven card stud is undeniably a very trendy casino pastime. The gaming fans, meticulously guarding their covered cards, must place bets in a central pot that is granted to the last gamester possessing the highest combination of cards. (Of course, the best bluff can easily win ..) Just like straight poker, blackjack too is a very trendy casino game. A generous portion of its repute is a result of its peculiar mix of luck and intelligence & choice making, as well as a method labeled “card counting”. This is a craft in which gambling devotees can significantly skew the probabilities of the card game to their own profit by both wagering & strategy opetations in correlation to the hands shown.

“Craps” is the name of another acclaimed gambling hall game where you bet money on the roll of 2 dice. Players bet on the outcome of of 1 roll, or on a succession of rolls on 2 dice. Dissimilar to blackjack, there can’t be a credible long term killer system punters can play on to bend the odds.

Roulette is another prominent casino game — a croupier will turn a roulette wheel featuring a set of thirty seven (applies to European roulette) or, respectively thirty eight (as in American roulette) distinctively numbered chambers in which a pellet will finally come to settle, which signifies the winning number as well as its respective odds. When the gamer wagers on a specific number which hits it in other words it’s their lucky day, the guaranteed payout is going to be thirty five to one, the pledge proper being paid back. Hence in totality it is multiplied by a factor of thirty-six.

Make a point of being very much cautious as well for all of these betting house pastimes are addiction forming. Many lives are proven to have been demolished thru inordinate gambling & notwithstanding that it can be entertaining, do venture to moderate oneself.

The Rehearsal Dinner

Monday, January 26th, 2009

The rehearsal dinner is a time to bring your entire wedding party, your parents and your future in-laws together for a relaxing evening before the big day. Not only is in opportunity to thank them for all their support throughout the wedding planning process, but it’s also a great way to unwind. That said, it is often better to organize a low-key, casual dinner where guests can sit around in jeans and t-shirts than to plan something formal. If you decide to have a more casual affair, you may decide to order pizza, Subway or to organize a potluck. The objective is to keep things comfortable for the guests, to reduce costs and to make the affair as easy to organize as possible. You will have enough worries, so don’t try to make this a gala event.

Here are a few additional points you should consider when planning the rehearsal dinner:

Costs

Traditionally, the rehearsal dinner is hosted and paid for by the groom’s parents. However, it is quite common for the couple to plan the shindig and cover the bill, so focus on bringing your closest friends and family together rather than throwing a huge party – i.e., be economical.

Time

When scheduling the date and time of the rehearsal dinner, keep in mind that the rehearsal dinner is held immediately after the wedding rehearsal. You should also know that the wedding rehearsal is about a half-hour long and is usually held the night before the wedding day.

Guests

Remember to invite everyone who was at the rehearsal, including the clergyman and significant others (e.g., boyfriends, girlfriends and spouses). Parents of any children in the wedding party should also be invited. Depending on budget constraints, you may also wish to extend an invitation to relatives who came from out-of-town to attend your wedding.

Now that we’ve covered the fundamental of the rehearsal dinner, it’s time for you to start planning. Use the http://www.groomgroove.com Rehearsal Dinner Checklist to make sure that you cover all your dinner planning tasks and stay on schedule. Enjoy, relax and have fun!

No More Jargon! A campaign for web simplicity.

Saturday, January 24th, 2009

Have you taken time recently to look at your website? When creating your website did you think about what matters? Find out…

When your company built its website, did you think about the content (the text) of your site? Did you write it for your customers? The answer to these questions is often ‘No.’

The first mistake most companies make when filling their website with content is overlooking who they’re writing for. The most common group they write it for is themselves. They fail to notice that the website is not for them, but their customers.

This oversight can define what content is then used for the site. Technical jargon and marketing waffle is used, and the Board is happy. You see, they like marketing speak and they know their products/services – so they assume knowledge of the products. This results in a website that’s not informing the customer of the information they need to know. The customer feels saddened and useless, and shops elsewhere.

So why not increase sales, write better documents and pamper your audience.

So how do you ensure your site is void of jargon? Aspiramedia web design have launched a free website for this reason – No Jargon. So what it’s about?

About “No Jargon”

It’s a campaign

No Jargon focuses on making the Internet free of jargon; it’s as simple as that.

It’s a showcase

As part of the No Jargon campaign, jargon-free sites are showcased. So help No Jargon by submitting your website.

It’s a collection of resources

No Jargon aims to help. A resources page helps to and informs about ditching jargon and adopting clear language.

The Proof Is In The Proofing: 7 Tips To Develop Great Proofreading Skills

Saturday, January 24th, 2009

In many professions, especially writing and internet marketing, the primary form of contact with customers is via the written word: website content, display ads, Spam-compliant emails, not to mention forum posts and even responses to queries, etc. The list is endless. And all of them have one thing in common: They are based on the written word.

Because of this, the importance of proofreading one’s work, word-for-word, cannot be over-stressed. No one would think of making a presentation while wearing a shirt covered in grease or spaghetti-sauce stains. Nor, despite a few eccentric exceptions, of appearing at one’s wedding in sandals and baggy shorts. Yet that is exactly the same thing as allowing even one ‘typo’ to appear in the final copy of any professional text.

To avoid these written faux pas, proofreading skills are essential. Proofreading to writing is the equivalent of house cleaning to home design or laundering to dress-making: While the house may be beautiful, it is nothing more than a fancy pig’s sty if not cleaned up; the gown nothing more than a rag, if not treated properly.

But proofreading is not an easy skill to develop, primarily because, for mystical reasons no writer will ever understand but will nonetheless verify (myself included), once a thought has been translated to a page, the author often develops a specialized kind of blindness, one in which they can no longer see what they’ve written clearly. Instead, all they see is what they *intended* to say.

But there is hope. As with any skill, producing letter-perfect copy comes with practice. Following are seven tactics for effectly proofreading. None of them will guarantee perfect copy. All of them have their weaknesses. But if at least two or three are employed on a consistent basis, typographical, punctuation and/or grammatical errors will show a marked decrease.

1) THE TRUTH ABOUT SPELL-CHECK: THERE, THEIR OR THEY’RE Upon its release, Spell-check was touted as every writer’s dream, allowing those without secretaries (i.e., 98% of us) to forego the tedious chore of proofreading. To say that it fell somewhat short of that goal is an understatement. However, it IS useful as a basic, first-run-through tool. And it does point out the most obvious errors.

2) AS YE SPAKE “You know, you can just, like, go over to this website and. . . “

This sentence an obvious example of one of the most common errors in writing and is hardly ever caught during proofreading. That is, general improper usage. As anyone learning a foreign language can attest, there is a distinct difference between what is acceptable in the less formal, oral format than its written counterpart. While writing should be fluid and succinct, it should not mimic spoken — even well-spoken — language. When proofreading, the signs of this type of misuse are: Overly informal slang; lack of reference within the context (i.e., over-using pronouns); and an abundance of typically oral modifiers (but, like, you see, etc.).

3) WHO SAID *THAT*? While writing, an author so often becomes embroiled in the act itself — of refining a thought or idea, of showing a progression of that thought — that he/she loses perspective. In the process, incomplete sentences may be left hanging, replacement words may be put in the wrong part of a sentence, complete thoughts might be chopped up. For this reason, it is often easier to see these errors if, no matter what the deadline, the writer takes a break before reading over their copy, then comes back and reads it through from the beginning. In this way, these type of errors will become glaringly obvious.

4) PRINT IT OUT AND READ IT AGAIN Though it’s doubtful gremlins really do reside within printers, the fact remains that most ‘typo’s’ can be found more easily in printed form. And, while it *seems* more efficient to proofread the text first, *then* print it, it actually wastes time. Perhaps it is because reading for sense and content, reading for typos AND correcting all at once can be a matter of covering too many bases. Whatever the case, printing a copy makes proofreading much easier.

5) FRIENDS READ FRIEND’S COPY There is an old proofreading saying that “a fresh pair of eyes make all the difference.” This is because after repeatedly looking at the same copy, the brain actually stops processing the information. By asking someone else to look over the same copy, the “fresh pair of eyes” can find the otherwise elusive typo. Co-workers, friends, and relatives can be the best help in this case. For long documents or a complete website, an alternate suggestion is to hire a professional proofreader.

6) READ IT OUTLOUD While it may seem to contradict the advice in #2, above, reading the text aloud often forces one to recognise a typo or grammatical error the eyes have scanned over and missed a dozen times. This goes to the core of why proofreading is so difficult: Simply put, the mind naturally adapts to what it sees very quickly. If one sees the same error repeatedly, without it being corrected, it ceases to recognise it as such. Thus, in proofreading, our own capabilites betray us. Professional proofreaders (yes, there is such a profession, though now only associated with the law and publishing fields) use a technique in which one proofreader will read aloud, while another proofreader (using a second copy) follows along, making corrections. This is an extreme measure, but worthwhile for any text that must be absolutely letter-perfect.

7) THE WORLD IS YOUR EDITOR Especially in the case of a substantial body of work (a website, for instance), an open invitation for correction should be given. Though, again, it seems contradictory to what has already been said here (in #5, above), inviting the corrections of the world at large allows for a greater source of information. And, of course, this is only after all other efforts have been made. Even with two or three people viewing the text, a broader forum of information can always pick out one or two straggling typo’s.

Using even one or two of these tips will enhance the body of any author’s work, allowing them to enjoy a professionalism they would otherwise be denied. Think of it as buying a new suit and tie, then dry-cleaning them regularly.–mo

An Unhappy Marriage: How to Know When it’s Really Over

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

It’s a fact. There are a lot of people who feel unhappy in their marriage. But the real question many of them are asking themselves is, how do I know when my marriage is really over? Is it when your spouse says, “I don’t love you anymore?” Is it after an affair takes place? How do you REALLY know? Keep reading to find out how to identify the warning signs that often indicate your spouse has given up on your marriage. First and Foremost: Has your spouse reached The Point of No Return? What is the Point of No Return in a marriage? Is there such a thing? After working with couples for over 11 years, I’ve identified a specific “path” that couples travel on the way to divorce. And at the end of this path is what I call…The Point of No Return. But I’m getting ahead of myself…let me back up for a second. In most cases, your marriage is NOT over when: – Your spouse moves out
- When your spouse says the infamous, “I love you, but I’m not in love with you anymore”
- When your spouse threatens you with divorce And believe it or not, in some cases, your marriage is NOT even over when…your spouse files for divorce. Your marriage is NOT over when your spouse begs, pleads, argues, screams, storms out of the house or turns the whole family against you.

Quite the contrary, The Point of No Return in a marriage IS confirmed when your spouse looks at you as if s/he were dead. There is no life in your spouse’s voice and no life in his/her eyes. Your spouse doesn’t get angry with you. S/he simply tells you when the divorce papers are going to be served. S/he’s already gone to the court house, found an attorney and has a service date set for the divorce proceedings. Your marriage is most likely over when your spouse has made complete lists of assets and debts with your both of your names on them. Your spouse has already decided on the custody plan and cleaned out any bank accounts with their name and yours and closed all the credit cards that you share. Your spouse has reached The Point of No Return when s/he already knows the courts require a 120 day waiting period and s/he has emotionally bolted him/herself in place for the long wait. You’ve gone WAY beyond an “unhappy marriage” when your spouse has talked many times to the children about divorce and they are now either scared, angry, hurt, confused or emotionally shut down. There’s a good chance your marriage is over when your spouse doesn’t care about how your children feel about it. S/he is only acting for his/her own survival at this point and s/he has repeatedly convinced him/herself that “The kids are good, they’ll be fine.” S/he may have even said that to friends and relatives.

This is the REAL Point of No Return. I’ve found that when your spouse has reached the Point of No Return, no one can save your marriage at this point. Not a priest, pastor or marriage counselor. So How Did this Happen? A marriage gets to this point because we live in a society that is convinced that once you are married, there is nothing you need to learn about marriage and nothing you need to practice. All you need is love. If you don’t have love, then it’s all your fault that your marriage failed. Because of this belief, you kept on doing exactly what you always did…your version of love. You treated your spouse the same way your father treated your mother…or vice versa. You kept on doing the same thing and kept on getting the same results. Your spouse could not help you to help him/her. No matter how many times s/he told you how to meet his/her needs, you couldn’t hear…you just couldn’t understand.

How do I know this? I know it because every single divorce is built on the same system. When your emotional needs are not met in a marriage, anywhere from 1-3 of the situations listed below will begin to take place in your marriage. Because you know virtually nothing about how to be married and how to support each other’s needs, you have no way to stop these issues from happening: – Affair
- Sex failure
- Communication break down
- No Loyalty
- In-Law problems
- Grew apart
- Fell out of love
- Blended family issues
- Abusive attitudes
- Depression
- Angry spouse
- No romance
- Ignores me
