It’s All in the Bread
Bread, one of man’s basic foods, is made of dough combined with water, yeast, salt, and egg among other ingredients. It is one of the oldest foods known to man. Its history dates back to more than 12,000 years ago, during the Neolithic era. Bread-making is credited to the Egyptians, who are said to be the world’s agricultural pioneers.
The significance of bread in man’s history began when the Egyptians controlled its production and distribution to help control their population. Its shortage is also one of the main causes of the French revolution in the late 1700’s.
Perhaps because of its popularity, there are now several types and varieties of bread. Some of the most common include brown bread, whole wheat, rye, oat, the sugar-free French bread, and sourdough. Examples of variations on the bread recipe are pizza, baguettes, pitas, and bagels. Some countries even have their own bread variations like Mexico’s pan dulce and Ireland’s Irish soda bread.
Although bread is basically a no-no for those on a low-carbohydrate or low fat diet, the emergence of numerous bread varieties, like rye and whole wheat, has given rise to its popularity among the health- and fitness-conscious population.
Whether taken as part of your main meal, or as an appetizer and snack alternative, bread is here to stay. Instead of spending on expensive power bars, why not try bread? Bring home some bread and stock up on protein and fiber. It’s all in the bread!
