Where to Look for Your Next Project when You’re Writing for Profit

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

When my first book “Starting Your Own Business” was published way back in 1995, I thought that was it. I reckoned I’d never write another one. But I was wrong. It has enjoyed many reprints, multiple editions, and proceeded over the years to generate another seven disparate titles from the same topic.

Towards the end of last year I completed the first draft manuscript for a commemorative fourth edition marking a decade in print. This has been accepted by the publisher and is due on world wide bookshelves in the autumn of 2005. The content has been updated, several topical new chapters have been added, and all in all it should start the ball rolling all over again by attracting a new breed of readers.

With that project out of the way, I was stumped where to look for the next.

I dug deep within myself and asked what else do I know about? I know how to start, manage and expand small businesses; I know about advising anyone on how to run an internet business from home, shop or office; I know how to instruct others on the subject of writing for profit, but what else do I know?

Then it dawned on me…

I also know how to enjoy a rewarding and fulfilling retirement.

And so I embarked on my new task, researched the topic, completed the text, submitted a proposal, and as a result “Your Retirement Masterplan” (ISBN 1857039874) was published in October 2004 and is already a bestseller – ranking at No.10 out of 3142 competitive titles on Amazon.co.uk.

But I didn’t let the matter rest there. I set about drafting a fresh proposal for a sequel “Your Retirement Cash Plan”. It too has been accepted for publication in the second quarter of 2005.

The Moral…

Dig deep within yourself. You know much more than you think you know.

PS: My youngest daughter reckons I should now give my early attention to something else I know about and start work on a project along the lines of
‘How to Become a Boring Old …’

How to Take an Employment Quiz

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

It is a common practice to use a personality quiz to match job candidates to available job positions. In this case, a personality quiz is called pre-employment.

What is a personality quiz? It usually consists of a number of multi-answer questions that are meant to determine some aspects of your personality which are vital for a given job. Basically, a pre-employment test is designed to create your behavioral model that enables the employer to predict how you will behave under the given set of circumstances.

Fear

A pre-employment personality test does not necessarily consist of “direct” questions (those that are directly related to the job). Instead, the questions might be pretty general referring to your habits, way of life and even daily diet.

Taking into account, the randomness of the question, you shouldn’t try to give “correct” answers to any of them. For example, when asked about your food preferences, don’t answer “healthy food” just for the sake of looking better than you are.

Remember, any personality quiz as well as the pre-employment quiz, is not aimed at determining if you are a “good” or “bad” person. There are no bad people by definition. Instead, there are people who will feel good taking the given position and people who just don’t match it (but will be great at some other job).

Britain is not Digitally Superior, confirms ITU

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009

The ITU or International Telecommunications Union is a leading agency of the United Nations that handles various issues related to ICT (information and communication technology). The latest research conducted by the ITU suggests that the United Kingdom is behind other European nations in terms of ICT penetration and availability at affordable prices. The research included over 150 nations and used two basic benchmarks for making the comparisons.

Experts at ITU used the ICT Development Index, which is based upon various factors such as access to ICT services, the total number of households that have a computer and the literacy rate. The second tool employed was the ICT Price Basket, which is used to calculate the average price for ICT services in various countries.

Due to high prices of ICT services in the country, the UK finds itself at the tenth position. The Scandinavian countries like Norway, Denmark and the Netherlands, which offer similar, or even better, services for cheaper prices have preceded the UK, with Sweden making it to the top of the list. mobile.broadbandgenie.co.uk for info on UK mobile broadband.

ITU further added that mobile broadband services have the potential of substantially adding to the total number of ICT users worldwide and ensure high-speed connectivity for the global community, as already there is a huge presence of mobile networks like 3G in many countries.

A Simple Guide to Wagering: Betting Establishment Betting

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

In the likely case that you have not figured out betting room card playing, you’ll want to peruse this.

By common definition a gaming establishment is a building that presents gaming. Patrons will hopefully enjoy themselves going for the slot-machines or trying out alternate betting pastimes. Betting hall games mainly have numerically determined percentages incorporated that guarantee the casino keeps possession of its upper hand over the betters.

A lot of betting saloon games encourage you to get overly dependent quickly. We can consider the stereotypical 1-armed-bandit, a coin gobbling gadget with 3, sometimes more reels that gyrate when an arm attached to it is tugged. This instrument regularly will spill winnings with reference to a series of motifs observable on the front panel of the machine. Unfortunately, betting saloon games present the semblance of staying in control, effectively deluding the gaming devotee: the punter is awarded judgments, but in reality these won’t ever truly remove the player’s long term odds. This is caused by the the betting room never paying the full amount as expected. This structure is regularly found in famous casino games such as stud poker, dice, roulette or blackjack.

Five-card stud poker is undoubtedly an immensely trendy casino game. The bettors, holding fully covered cards, will wager into a central pot which is ultimately given to the prevailing player sitting on the winning hand. (Of course, the coolest bluffing hand may actually win too.)

internet casino

Quite like straight poker, blackjack too is an immensely popular casino pastime. A considerable chunk of its notoriety is owed to its peculiar mix of luck and skill and choice making, not to forget a routine termed “counting”. This is an approach by which gambling devotees are in a position to actually switch the odds of the card game in their favor both by wagering & strategy decisions corresponding with the cards shown.

“Craps” is another acclaimed game where people bet money on the roll of two dice. Patrons have to make bets on the score of one cycle, or on a string of rolls on 2 dice. Dissimilar to blackjack, there’s absolutely no proven bona fide winner system punters can profit from to ramp up the odds.

Roulette is a celebrated game. Here, a croupier rotates a roulette wheel encompassing a set of precisely 37 (as in French roulette) or exactly thirty-eight (Vegas roulette) independently marked cells in which the rolling pellet will eventually settle, revealing the winner as well as the other chances that will always come with it. Assuming that our gamester happens to bet on a specific number which wins so they’ve got a lucky hand, the guaranteed remuneration is going to be thirty-five to 1, the original wager itself being given back. Thus the initial pledge is increased by 36.

3 Tips For Better Google Rankings

Monday, March 9th, 2009

Google now checks the year your domain name was first registered.

This just makes sense. Those that care about their domain and their brand will register their domain for a long time. This demonstrates commitment. Of course it’s not very hard for a spammer to do the same but the upfront costs are just that little bit higher and might help act as a deterrent. If anything a short domain registration period will be yet another flag in the Google system that will keep certain sites away from top rankings. Hopefully it will be the spammers that trigger the penalty when combined with all the other spam flags they trigger.

If you are anything like me and you like to register domains for an “idea” you have for the future there is no way you will be investing in a 10 year registration for something you may never pursue. An idea is an idea and I know half of the domains I buy amount to nothing. However buying the domain also signifies *some* commitment to the project and on many occasions is the motivational spark I need to get the website built and a new project off the ground. A one or two year registration is not a significant cost. Securing a domain for 10 years is. The easy workaround is to initially register a domain for the minimum period, if things take off then renew the domain for a longer period. Simple.

Google now places huge emphasis on links. They want to see a slow, gradual increase to the number of incoming links to your websites. Links need to have a variety of anchor text phrases. If all your anchor links are the same you could get de-listed or lose ranking position.

Ahh, natural linking patterns. I’ve mentioned this before – Google in many ways destroyed what it relies on to create such a great search engine. Before Google linking patterns were very natural, organic with sites linking to each other in many different ways, with different anchor text built up over a long period of time. Sites grew in popularity slowly and incoming links increased subsequently at similar rates of growth. Google stepped in and used these patterns in a ranking algorithm to accurately value sites. It worked, almost too well. Google became so popular that people began to study what it takes to rank highly. They learnt it was all about incoming links so they started an unnatural linking process, creating link farms and chasing incoming links with a vengeance.

Google wants natural linking back and will reward those sites that appear to be popular based on natural linking. This is not an exact science of course but if you do these things you are on the right track:

  • Make sure your incoming links are not all carbon copies of the same keyword phrase. Vary the incoming anchor text with different phrases.
  • Make sure you get links from many sites with varied PageRank. Assess link swaps based on the site (content, relevance) asking for the exchange, not solely on the green PR bar at the top of the site.
  • Chase back links naturally, slowly increasing their number over time. If you go from 10 – 5000 backlinks in one month Google is going to think you are link farming and penalise you.
  • Don’t get paranoid. Stressing over why your site won’t get listed and pressuring other sites for link exchanges can drive you crazy. Take it easy and work on building a great site slowly, tell the right people about it and they will spread the word for you.

Google is telling us that they look for relevant, quality content on your websites, which is no surprise, and that PageRank is a good indicator of a website’s “authority” and relevancy.

The key term here is authority. Those sites that have been online for a long time with established authority in their field wield the power. One link from an authority site can boost you to the top of the rankings but take it away and you can just as easily fade to the bottom of the rankings. Again the emphasis here is on establishing links from many sites with various rankings. If you build an amazing site eventually the authority sites in your field may just link to you anyway and won’t that make you feel special!

How do you build an authority site? With hard work of course. Authority sites don’t appear out of nowhere, they build their authority over time by consistently working on quality content and audience creation. Don’t expect overnight success, if you want a popular website you have to work at it for years, not weeks.

Survivor Reality Television Show Contestants Need More Personal Tech Devices

Monday, March 9th, 2009

When watching reality Television Shows, specifically “Survivor” it seems rather obvious that when one is walking thru the jungle or over difficult terrain, it might be easy to get lost. They therefore need GPS devices and some type of better lighting. Survivor Reality Television Show Contestants need body mounted lighting and holsters for their personal tech survival gear. One man suggested that;

“With people walking/running, we need a way to keep the light itself to stay direct. We do not want the light from the device to bounce with every twist and turn.”

Yes, this is a big concern. The human eyes on the body stay focused all the time. So the vision stays the same and the rest of the body moves. Evolution has provided humans with this incredible design. But if we are to mount a GPS unit and a lighting system on the person we need to consider that there is less bounce and less jarring at the hip and also at the center of the chest.

For the women Survivor Contestants; the light could rest between their breasts on a clip using a fiber optic tiny wire. For men it might be better to use Velcro for the front of the shirt although I generally run without a shirt on? So there is that? And for that naked guy, just Velcro it to his crotch or chest hair and let him deal with that later. Ouch!

That is not difficult really, as there are many personal tech devices and types of survival gear, which are mounted in such a way for this very same reasons. The light should be mounted on a floater. This is a great idea especially for those who jog with it.

Actually one engineer made a very good point and that is if you are tromping through the forest the light will bounce so much that you will not be able to see at night and you will probably get injured sometime through out the night. The GPS unit is not a critical and perhaps could be warn around the neck.

One might also ask what do miners use? And if you are looking at the ground directly in front of you, then you will be trying to look thru the light rather than where the beam might be pointed and a poor Survivor Contestant could easily step on a snake and be out of the contest. This is one reason that Survivor Reality Television Show Contestants need more Personal Tech Devices and why they must be properly mounted. Think on this in 2006.

Water in All Its Glory

Monday, March 9th, 2009

Water is one of the world’s more precious resources. It serves many purposes but the most important of these is keeping us and our planet alive. Because of it, we can drink it, wash with it, cook with it, and nourish our plants with it as well as numerous other activities we often take for granted every day. The best thing about this important resource is the fact that it’s free and very accessible. Not for everyone though, although clean, fresh drinking water is essential to human and other life and access to safe drinking water has improved steadily and substantially over the last ten years in almost every part of the world, some studies have shown that by 2025 more than half of the world’s population will be facing water-based vulnerability. The United Nations call this situation a water crisis. Not only is water important for human and other life forms, water also plays an integral role in the world economy, as it functions as a solvent for a variety of chemical substances and facilitates industrial cooling and transportation. Try to imagine a day without water, people would be walking around dehydrated, performing badly at work, our clothes would smell and we would smell, our houses would be dirty, it would all be too much to bear. Water really is precious.

Become A Ghostwriter

Becoming A Ghostwriter By: Lorraine Cote

Ghostwriting can be rewarding in two ways. a) You get a chance to research and write about all types of topics that you wouldn’t normally have a chance to learn about. The old theory in writing “write what you know” doesn’t apply to ghostwriting since your clients will dictate what topic you will write about.

b) You can make a decent living at it.If you’re new to writing, it may take a while to get clients but it is possible. It just takes a little hard work and perserverance. There are several ways to get clients. Here are a few.

1. Bid on writing jobs on contracted work site such as Elance.com, Guru.com and Getafreelancer.com You basically signup as a service provider to begin bidding on projects posted by clients. If you win the bid, you do the writing project as a ghostwriter. 2. Place ads for your ghostwriting service on free classified ad sites. It doesn’t cost anything to post ads on these sites and is a good way to get yoru services out there in front of potential clients.

3. Post responses in forums with a signature that defines your ghostwriting service and an email address or website URL. Something along the lines of “Affordable Ghostwriting Services,[your website url] or email for more details [your email address].

4. Introduce your services in forums where you are allowed to do this. Many forums have a section where you can introduce your business. See out writing forums for this.

5. Have business cards created showcasing your ghostwriting business. Pass them out every chance you get. Put them on bulletin boards in supermarkets etc. You can create your own or have them made.

6 Write a press release announcing your services. There are plenty of no-cost or low-cost distribution services on the web to get the message out for you. Ghostwriting may not be for everyone because you don’t get credit for your work, the client does. If that doesn’t matter to you and you like writing on a variety of topics, it can be an enjoyable way to earn some money.
